Modern Kitchen Transformation

Chicago, Illinois, USA

a large kitchen with a center island surrounded by stools

Project Overview

The kitchen is arguably the hardest-working room in any home, and its design has a direct impact on the quality of daily life. This transformation in Chicago focused on rebuilding the room around how the client actually uses it prioritising workflow, storage efficiency, and the social dimension of cooking that makes the kitchen a natural gathering place. The new design introduces a contemporary aesthetic through clean lines, quality materials, and considered hardware, without sacrificing the functionality that makes a kitchen genuinely practical.

The Challenge

The existing kitchen had been designed without sufficient thought for how modern households actually use the space. Counter space was critically limited, making food preparation feel cramped and stressful. Appliance placement had not been considered in relation to workflow, meaning common cooking tasks required unnecessary movement back and forth across the kitchen. The overall aesthetic was dated, and the limited storage resulted in overcrowded surfaces that made the room harder to work in.

Our Solution

A kitchen island was introduced as the centrepiece of the redesign providing additional counter space for preparation, housing built-in storage underneath, and creating a natural point of social interaction for guests or family members while cooking happens around them. Custom cabinetry was designed to make full use of available wall height, with internal organisation systems that keep everyday items accessible and less-used items neatly stored. Appliances were repositioned to create a logical and efficient workflow. The material palette matte cabinetry, stone countertops, and integrated hardware was selected for both its visual quality and its practical durability.
