Basement Conversion Project

Project Overview

What was once a cold, underutilised basement in Minneapolis has become a fully functional living and entertainment space that the entire family uses daily. This project focused on solving the fundamental challenges that make basements difficult to inhabit poor light, inadequate insulation, moisture risk, and low ceilings and then building a comfortable interior on top of that solid foundation. The final space includes a flexible layout that works equally well for movie nights, casual entertaining, a home gym, or a quiet workspace, depending on the need.

The Challenge

Basements in colder climates like Minneapolis present a specific set of problems that go beyond cosmetic renovation. This space had no natural light whatsoever, poor thermal insulation that made it uncomfortable year-round, no proper flooring beyond raw concrete, and most critically evidence of moisture intrusion that posed a long-term risk to any finishes or furnishings installed below grade.

Our Solution

We began with the building fabric itself, applying a comprehensive moisture management system including waterproof membranes and improved drainage before any interior finishes were introduced. Thermal insulation was installed throughout the walls and ceiling to bring the space to a comfortable, consistent temperature. Moisture-resistant luxury vinyl flooring was laid over the concrete slab, providing warmth and durability without the risk associated with hardwood in below-grade conditions. With no access to natural light, the lighting design became central to the project a layered system of recessed ceiling lights, wall-mounted sconces, and accent lighting was used to create a warm, inhabited atmosphere that makes the lack of windows entirely forgettable.
