Project Overview

The best cafés are never just about the coffee. They are about the feeling of the place the quality of the light, the comfort of the seating, the sense that the space was designed with genuine care. This project in Brooklyn set out to create exactly that kind of environment: a café where customers feel at ease whether they're catching up with a friend, settling in for a few hours of work, or simply enjoying a quiet moment to themselves. Warm materials, considered lighting, and a layout that balances intimacy with accessibility were the key tools in achieving that atmosphere.

The Challenge

The original café space was narrow a layout that posed significant challenges for seating capacity and comfortable movement between tables. The lighting was harsh and clinical, stripping the interior of any warmth or personality. Without a cohesive material or colour language, the space felt unfinished and forgettable, unlikely to inspire the kind of loyalty that makes a neighbourhood café successful.

Our Solution

Custom bench seating was designed along the perimeter walls, making efficient use of the narrow footprint while creating the kind of relaxed, settled seating that encourages customers to stay. Freestanding tables and chairs were positioned to allow comfortable circulation between the counter and the seating areas. The lighting was entirely redesigned pendant fixtures over seating zones provide warm, intimate pools of light, while softer ambient lighting fills the wider space. A consistent material palette of warm timber, matte plaster finishes, and natural textiles brought coherence and character to the interior, giving the café a distinct personality that customers can genuinely connect with.
