Minimalist furniture layout
Minimalist Living Room Design
Portland, Oregon, USA

Project Overview
True minimalism is not about emptiness t is about intention. Every element in this Portland living room was chosen because it earns its place: visually, functionally, and emotionally. The project set out to create a space that feels expansive and serene without feeling bare, where natural light, carefully selected materials, and a restrained colour palette do the quiet work of making a room feel genuinely inviting. The result is a living room that is easy to be in one that slows you down the moment you enter it.
The Challenge
The previous version of this room was working against itself. Oversized furniture had reduced the sense of space significantly, making the room feel congested and difficult to move through. The lighting was uneven bright in some areas and dim in others which created visual tension rather than calm. The layout had not been designed around conversation or relaxation, and the client found themselves spending little time in a room that should have been the most comfortable in the house. The additional challenge was achieving a minimalist aesthetic without losing the warmth and liveability the client needed.
Our Solution
We began by completely clearing the room and reassessing the furniture from scratch. Appropriately scaled pieces were selected a low-profile sofa, a simple coffee table, and a single statement chair arranged to encourage natural conversation and take advantage of the room's best sightlessness. A layered lighting plan replaced the single overhead fitting, using floor lamps, recessed spots, and a central pendant to allow the lighting mood to shift from bright and functional to soft and ambient. Textured linen fabrics, a natural timber side table, and a wool area rug introduced warmth and tactile quality to the neutral palette, ensuring the space felt genuinely lived in rather than staged.
